An agreement was signed today between the Design Summit Meeting Steering Committee (DSMSC) and the Cité du design—École Supérieure d’Art et Design Saint-Étienne to conduct a 2019 Pre-Summit Meeting on 3–5 April 2019 to coincide with the City’s design Biennial, the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne. The Design Summit Meeting Steering Committee represents the 22 international entities that participated in the first Design Summit Meeting (DSM01), which took place in Montréal (Canada) on 23–24 October 2017 resulting in the historic Montreal Design Declaration.

The 3–5 April 2019 meeting is the next milestone on a path leading to future full-scale Design Summit Meetings in 2020 (DSM02) and 2023 (DSM03). The Pre-Summit Meeting will focus on key projects included in the Montreal Design Declaration identified by the international design entities in a recent survey as highest priority.

Thus, the Saint-Étienne Pre-Summit Meeting sessions will be devoted to three focus areas:

01 Establishing metrics and collecting data and case studies to more effectively communicate the value of design;

02 Supporting development of National and Regional Design Policies;

03 Fostering development, recognition, support and funding for design education and research, including development of new formats for design education curricula.

Work committees composed of representatives of the participating international entities will prepare for the April Pre-Summit Meeting sessions, beginning in September 2018. The working committees will start to identify working methodologies, collaborators, project timelines and objectives as well as determining resource requirements and cataloguing available expertise.

The Design Summit Meeting Steering Committee is composed of:

  • Bureau of European Design Associations
  • International Federation for Housing and Planning
  • International Association of Universities and Colleges in Art, Design and Media
  • International Council of Design
  • International Federation of Landscape Architects
  • Interaction Design Association

For a full list of Summit participants please see below.

The Saint-Étienne Pre-Summit Meeting, organised by the Design Summit Meeting Steering Committee, is the first official meeting of the Summit participants since the Montréal DSM01 in 2017. The Design Summit Meeting Steering Committee will soon be launching the DSM02 and DSM03 bid process to identify host cities for future Design Summit Meetings.

PARTICIPATION

Participation in the Saint-Étienne Pre-Summit Meeting is by invitation only and is reserved exclusively to international entities. In addition to the representatives of the 22 international entities listed in the Montréal Design Declaration, additional international entities that have expressed interest in joining the process since DSM01 have also been invited. As in DSM01, additional international, national and regional stakeholders will be invited to attend as observers. There is no charge for participation in the Saint-Étienne Pre-Summit Meeting. Delegates are, however, responsible for their travel and hotel expenses. Pre-registration is required. A hotel package will be available.

This innovative event, open to everybody and resolutely turned towards prospective and research through design invites the audience to get as close as possible to creation.

La Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne gives a voice to designers, economic operators, institutions, researchers, artists, students… who, through design, develop the possible scripts of our daily lives and whose projects or achievements are as many concrete proposals of lifestyles, linked to our current or future uses.

La Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne is built around exhibitions and strong ideas that promote contemporary creation. Accessible to all audiences, the Biennale takes place in a warm atmosphere, punctuated by a large program of events, talks, workshops, meetings… It holds a unique place in the world of design, as much by its exhibitions as by its ability to foster interactions or by the variety of publics it welcomes.
